WRITING FOR A RAINY DAY

It’s mid-January, and it’s a particularly blustery day. The rain hasn’t stopped, miserably patting down onto the squelchy, squishy leaf-carpet that covers most of my garden. Little birds have been politely taking turns at the birdfeeder, while squirrels dart about to dodge the rain drops, bounding across fence tops as thin as a tightrope. The wind has howled through the bare winter trees, but all the while, I’ve been tucked up in my cosy office, watching through the window.

What to do?

Write, of course! There’s nothing more wonderful than the moment a spark of imagination lights up in your mind with an idea for a new story. Look out of your window. Yes, you! What can you see? The outside world is full of incredible, inspiring things to write about. The beauty of the ever-changing sky, the rain drops spattering across slate rooftops and waving tree branches, the silent scuttle of animals in the hedgerows, the lonely, soaked garden furniture dreaming of the summer holidays… the list is endless. Once you’ve found your idea, what magic can you add to it? That beautiful cloud up there… what’s behind it? Is that a castle you can make out, perched within the fluffy candyfloss tufts? What about those windows on that cottage in the distance? I’m sure they just blinked… the house must be alive and waiting for its story to be told.

Now look inside, just at the things around you. What stories do they have to tell? I wonder who lives inside the shining brightness of my fairy-lights above my desk. Each one of those tiny bulbs may very well be a home to a tiny creature, or indeed an entire city…

The world is at your fingertips. Find something around you, pick up a pencil, and tell its story. The raindrops may look sad from a distance… but inside each one is a world waiting for you to discover it.
